Cat drooling is something that many cat owners worry about. I know Cassie drools sometimes when she ‘goes in the zone’ while kneeding me. Here are some other reasons why your cat might drool.
Drooling may be a normal reaction in cats, at the sight of a tasty meal; certain cat breeds drool more than others due to the structure of their face; however, if the drooling is excessive, this may be a symptom of a cat illness.

I have a 7 year old male cat that has chronic diarrhoea. He has lost a little weight (about 1 lb. over the last 5 months) during this time and he has had surgery for a “stone” in his bladder about six months ago. About a month or so (after surgery) later is when he developed the diarrhoea. We have had him to two different vets who have tested for worms, blood tests, etc. We have tried special diets etc. with no change in his diarrhoea. We have not noticed any other symptoms. Any suggestions or thoughts–we don’t know what to do for him???–Thanks–Ted
Hi Ted,
Are you feeding him on cows milk? This is known to cause diarrhea. He could have a hairball lodged in his intestine which is only allowing watery fecal matter through. Try adding a teaspoon of mashed boiled pumpkin to his food and make sure he has dry biscuits available at all times. Have you tried feeding him a food designed to reduce/prevent hairballs? Is it possible that he has eaten a pot plant (indoor or outdoor) that he is reacting to? Do you have any snail/slug pellets in your garden? Or fertilizer on the lawn? Have you put out any rat or mouse deterrents that he may have eaten? Is it possible that the neighbors have been feeding him as well? Does he roam?
Try feeding him a bland diet for a few days – boiled rice or potato with some boiled mince or chicken. You can also try adding a bulking agent such as Benefiber or Metamucil to his food but be very cautious with the amounts, no more than half a teaspoon. Make sure there is always plenty of fresh water available for him. If you don’t feel up to cooking for him, try some moist food that contains chicken or lamb and rice.
Please let me know how he goes and if I can help any further.
Kathy
