It seems that most families have owned a cat at one time or another. And there are probably as many reasons for owning a cat, as there are breeds of cat. Cats seem to choose us and they are not concerned how much money we have, or where we live. Some of the many different reasons people for owning a cat can include company, especially in old age. For others, it could be to help teach children responsibility in looking after a pet. When we were farming. We kept cats to take care of the mice as well as for pets for our children.
Cats have always had the ability to bring out the child in us. They make us laugh and are totally non-judgemental. There is something very soothing in having a cat curled up in your lap start purring, then fall asleep. Having an animal trust you that much, especially a cat, who is normally so aloof and self sufficient, is very humbling.
Cats have proven beneficial for children and adults alike. If there is stress or illness, cats can help ease the pain. Some cats have refused to leave the side of someone in the family who is ill. Others have got help when needed, just as dogs have done. There have even been cases of cats pining and dying when their owners have passed on. For the elderly living on their own, their cats can be a reason to want to continue living. Those who are housebound, for whatever reason, should never be lonely or bored with a cat in the house.
Just as with all living things, comes responsibility. It is necessary to train your kitten and and provide it with the essentials of life such as food, water and love. Boundaries must be set and adhered to. Just like with kids and partners.
While cats will talk to you, they will never answer back or hurt you emotionally. They will continue to return the love you give them tenfold. And cats are much much more fun than computer games.
